Rightly hailed as an all time classic, 2010-04-08
This album appears very high up in many greatest albums of all time lists and very near the top of nearly every list of best albums by female artists. And I'm certainly not going to disagree.
This 1971 album was produced by Mitchell herself while still in her twenties and all the songs are written by her so we see what the depth of her talents. It marked the end of her "folk" music period, though to categorise this album as imply folk really doesn't do it justice.
The songs vary in mood and tempo from the upbeat "Carey" to the melancholy "Blue". There are songs about lost love, homesickness and nostalgia for old friendships. Mitchell uses all the songs to show off both her amazing voice and amazing song writing ability.
"River" is my favourite song on the album but they are all classics really. There are also instrumental appearances from Stephen Stills and James Taylor on some tracks.
Simply a beautiful album that I never tire of listening to.

An absolutely wonderful album. Peaceful without being boring, simple without being dull and she has a lovely voice. I can recommend this album.

Even though I'm a musician and a Joni fan it took me many years to get around to buying and listening to Blue - what a mistake it was to not have this album for so long. If told that I could could have only one CD then Blue would be the one - but then I could have 10 then at least 5 would be Joni !!
I listen to many of my favorite albums while doing things but if I put Blue on I feel compelled to stop whatever I'm doing and sit back and listen - again and again and again.
Joni is the complete artist and Blue is evidence of her virtuosity and genius as a composer , lyricist , musician , producer and singer - she'll make you laugh ( California ) and she'll make you cry ( A case of you ).
Jonis' daring and innovative musical adventures have taken to many styles and challenges and wherever she went she was usually the first one there.
If you don't know Joni Mitchell ( and even if you do ) then take the time to LISTEN to this remarkable album.
A true Singer/Songwriter, 2009-12-29
There is a lot of rubbish written on the likes of Bob Dylan or Leonard Cohen and their ability as songwriters. Dylan managed a few decent constructions and Cohen one! (The Partisans).
Joni, however, managed consistency even songs of hers that can be dismissed (Circle Game, Big Yellow Taxi, for example)tower above anything Dylan produced.
Blue is recognised as her classic for one reason: it is!
Even if this was just a recording of 'The Last Time I Saw Richard'; a song of such aching beauty that it is hard to believe that everyone involved in its recording were not drowned in their own tears, this album would still outshine so many million of others.
This is a bargain. But any price would be worth paying to have this album.

Joni Mitchell would go on from this 1971 recording to make more popular, more ambitious and more challenging albums, but she's never made a better one. Working with minimal accompaniment (Stephen Stills and James Taylor are two of the four sidemen), the Canadian songbird summoned an involving song cycle of romance found and lost. Though Blue is an uncommonly intimate representation, it's also astonishingly open and gracious. Songs such as "All I Want", "Carey", "California" and "A Case of You" work equally well as poetry and pop music. --Steve Stolder
