Average rating of 2/5 Lack of info leads to major disappointment, 2010-08-26
I came across the pond to buy a copy of one of my favorite films, viz., the theatrical version of The Last of the Mohicans only to slip it into my all region Blu-ray player and discover it was not anamorphic. To blow it up on the display only degrades the picture quality. It is unforgivable in this day and age for any company to release a disk without making it anamorphic and worse yet that Amazon.uk did not note this condition. I would not have purchased it had I known. This is a great film with stunning visuals, a superb sound track and excellent story well acted and directed. Wait for the Blu-ray to come out. Average rating of 1/5 Great film, shoddy DVD, 2010-08-19
Bought this from the channel Islands rather than from Amazon, it was so dark you couldn't see it even with the curtains closed. As you know it is a forest / darkness sort of film, the video it replaced was better. sent it back and they refunded DVD and post - good show but I don't know I'd risk it again, had to send 2/5 back.

Average rating of 5/5 Best film ever, 2009-12-30
Love this film and was recieved in lots of time for present quick delivery from seller was very happy with purchase

Average rating of 5/5 IT might be noted, 2009-09-22
this is the original theatrical edition-the expanded directors cut is a botched job.

It is difficult to tell if the mfg date is 2006, or just a re-stocking date
if this was mastered in 2006-then it should look good, as the original was in the US 2001, and 2005 repectively

Average rating of 5/5 The Last of the Mohicans.., 2010-03-23
This 1992 adaption of the Fenimore Cooper Historical novel has been transformed from a dry novel to a full blown romantic adventure in the hands of director/co-writer Michael Mann with help from screen writer Christopher Crowe they have made a type of film that film makers rarely make these days.

The 1936 version of the movie with Randolph Scott in the part of Hawkeye is the first film Michael Mann could recall from his childhood and during his retelling of the tale you do get the sense of wonder the story obviously holds for him with Daniel Day Lewis playing the character of Hawkeye for all his worth, with the overblown heroics of the story being used to great effect in Mann's vision of the story.

The DVD does suffer from a lot of scenes that look grainy and a little blurry even using an up-scaling DVD player the picture is far from satisfying in its 2.35:1 aspect but the sound is a different matter this won an Oscar in 1993, the 5.1 surround sound is very well mixed and adds to the action sequences in the woods and round the waterfalls, this could be another case for picture restoration.

Editorial Review
Amazon.co.uk Review
The Last of the Mohicans is a large-scale adventure set during the colonial conflicts between Britain and France 20 years before the American War of Independence. Based loosely on the novel by James Fenimore Cooper, but actually inspired by director Michael (Manhunter, Heat) Mann's boyhood love of the 1936 film of the same name, this is rousing, romantic stuff. As "Hawkeye", a white raised by the last of the Mohican tribe, Daniel Day-Lewis delivers a performance which, had he followed it up, could have established him as an action hero for the 1990s and beyond. Despite an under-written role Madeline Stowe convinces as the heroine. The remaining cast are uniformly excellent. Filmed amid the spectacular mountains, rivers and forests of North Carolina by Mann's regular cinematographer, Dante Spinotti, the film is a visual joy, while Trevor Jones' majestic, spine-tingling score (with additional music by Randy Edleman) is one of the finest of the decade. Taking time to establish the motives of British and French colonists and the various native tribes, as well as the varying opinions and characters within these groupings, Mann offers much greater balance and complexity than The Patriot (2000), yet never looses sight of the object here: telling a stirring yarn laced with bold action set pieces and passionate romance.

On the DVD: The anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 image is a massive improvement over VHS, but still shows considerable grain in many scenes, possibly a result of the film being shot in low, natural light and containing many very dark sequences. The Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack is very powerful, though little use is made of the rear channels, and in some scenes the sound effects all but drown out the dialogue. Isolated scores are usually only found on feature-packed special editions, so the inclusion here is a welcome surprise--and a testament to its popularity. The only other extra is an anamorphic 2.35:1 presentation of the immensely stirring theatrical trailer. --Gary S Dalkin
