Translators Stephen Addiss and Stanley Lombardo have done their best not to reinterpret the Tao Te Ching, but to allow it to speak for itself. This wonderful English version preserves the epigrammatic terseness of the original. The layout and illustrations strike the same note as the text.
What can I say - this is the best way to approach this work, short of translating it yourself. Warmly recommended

I don't know all the metaphorical significance of this book, but I feel on the surface that the book is an intersting read, that you want to know what is going to happen to the family and especially the protagonist. You also feel for these people, which is, considering how short the story is, uncommon.
You have to read it to appreciate it, but it definately deserves a place as a classic.

I wonder if this and Pliny's letters are best sellers merely because they are both set books for the Open University's newly presented course A219 Exploring the Classical World?
No this is unworthy, as both are in their own way readable & interesting.
Perhaps more insights as the couse progresses?

This edition makes the old Avery and Macintosh volumes look like the unfortunate and forgettable McKinley and Keyes editions from the 70s. You remember those--all that hair. But that's all in the past, isn't it? Best to move along...Regardless, this copy is wonderful, words and text arranged from top to bottom, left to right as is the custom. I would suggest page 17s recipe (and my personal favorite)"The Magician". A wonderful taste, not unlike licking sawdust from a stainless steel butterknife.

Excellant story which grabbed the childrens attention, 2002-02-05
The story described how chinese new year is celebrated with the new year parade. It showed the lion dance and dragon dance in the parade, the children loved the rhyming story and excellant illustrations. As you near the end of the story the pages pull out to show a long dragon. What a bargain at the price
